I remember the lights.

I remember I wanted to photograph them, the way the red and blue splashed across his cold, emotionless face. But I knew even if my feet could move from the place where they had cemented themselves to the ground and I could run for my camera, I wouldn’t be able to capture that moment.
I had trusted him, I had loved him, and even though my body had changed that summer, he’d made sure to help me hold on to who I was inside, regardless of how the exterior altered.
But then everything changed.
He stole my innocence. He scarred my heart. He took everything I thought I knew about my life and fast-pitched it out the window, shattering the glass that held my world together in the process.
I remember the lights.
The passionate, desperate, hot strikes of red. The harsh, cruel, icy bolts of blue.
They symbolized everything I endured that summer.
And everything I would never face again.

Why is it a top book of 2016?

Steiner creates an unforgettable story with Weightless. Natalie and Rhodes will become engrained in your being. This novel has everything you look for in a great story…it will give you all the feels. You will be in suspense and then be blindsided. But most of all you will fall in love in the most unlikely couple. Weightless teaches us that even in the darkest hour, there will always be a sliver of light.

This is the final book on this year’s top 10 that was an author discovery novel. Weightless was my first Kandi Steiner read. I saw her cover reveal on another author’s page and thesynopsis  was so gripping. I had this moment where I just knew I needed to read this book. I’ve actually read Weightless multiple times this year and listened to the audiobook (which is freaking amazing!) and although the shock value of the first read gets weakened, this book continues to stir emotions and thoughts in me every single read through.

At it’s core Weightless is a coming of age story. It’s about finding your true self in your darkest moments, Natalie and Rhodes are our main leads and they are both battling elements in their lives. Natalie is a recent high school grad who is struggling with body image. She’s always been a little bigger than the other girls and she’s realizing the impact it’s had. It’s a tough pill to swallow that her boyfriend left her for someone thin and that her mother has always wished she could get the weight off. Facing her best friend leaving early for college and a shift in her social circle, Nat decides to make a change and attends personal training sessions courtesy of her mother and step father.

Thes sessions are where she meets Rhodes, the dark bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks. Nat is fasinated and attracted to him but Rhodes feels he is too much darkness for Nat’s light. Even so he guides her through her stuggles with weight loss and her food choices and encourages her as she gains self confidence. But when the pair get close, there are many secrets that are revealed and they can change everything. Will Natalie be brought down by Rhodes or remain weightless and untainted?

You will adore Natalie and Rhodes. I think that every reader will relate to them on some level.

Nat is the girl who thought she had it all but realizes her popularity was due to her last name. She struggles so much with her self image and her confidence level. She faces really big life decisions. I know I felt so much of Nat’s pain during different periods of my life and really connected with her. She’s just such a sweet and well facated character that you won’t be able to not root for her.

Rhodes is the darker foil to Nat. Rhodes carries a lot of guilt on his shoulders and it effects how he views himself, how he values himself. He’s built himself up in his own mind to be unworthy of the life he truly deserves. I think everyone has moments where we think are stuck and we’ve done things to deserve to be stuck. Rhodes has an important line of self discovery in Weightless as well and it’s just as touching as Nat’s.

This books gives you all the feels. Steiner totally creates the rollercoaster and let me tell me, she likes to throw extra loops on it. Without giving a lot away, there is a lot of build up to an ending that would break your heart and then a homb is dropped. And literally the whole outcome is twisted in a completely dfferent direction. It’s not sunshine and unicorns but the twist will blow your mind. On my rereads, I’ve seen the small hints but Steiner just set this plot line up so magnificently. It was really a show of her talent that you feel so blindsided. Many authors have a hard time and leave huge hints and you figure out where they’re going. Weightless floored me. I was even waiting for the shoe to drop due to the synopsis and I was still shocked. I absolutely can’t brag on her writing in this aspect enough.
